Kidney Transplant Patient and Advocate Kevin Fowler to Speak

Patient advocate and transplant recipient Kevin Fowler will be the special guest speaker at Dr. Mary Politi’s Principles of Shared Decision Making course (Spring M19-530) on March 19, 2018. The course is part of the Master of Population Health Sciences (MPHS) program at Washington University School of Medicine.

The topic of Fowler’s lecture will be My Patient Journey and the Power of Shared Decision Making. Fowler was the recipient of a live kidney donor transplant performed here at Barnes in 2004.

“I am looking forward to returning home where I received exceptional patient care both before and after my pre-emptive kidney transplant,” says Fowler. “BJC/Washington University served as my foundation in both my patient journey and shared decision making journey.”

Using his professional background and experience as a patient, Fowler shares his unique perspective with other patients, health care providers and “thought leaders” in the industry. In 2014, he formed his own patient advocacy and patient engagement consulting business, The Voice of the Patient, Inc. His clients have included CareDx, Immucor Inc., Hansa Medical, Horizon Pharma, TapCloud LLC, Otsuka, Omeros, Protalix Biotherapeutics, and patientMpower.

In 2016, the American Association of Kidney Patients presented Fowler with its Social Media Education & Advocacy Award. In 2017, he was selected to be a Patient Editor for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Fowler is a significant voice of the kidney community on Twitter and can be found at @gratefull080504.

“It is important to engage patients in healthcare decisions,” says Dr. Politi, the MPHS Shared Decision Making course instructor. “Kevin Fowler is an excellent patient advocate and representative of the patient’s voice. His talk will help us learn about the positive impact we can have when we collaborate with patients to meet their healthcare needs.”

Mr. Fowler’s lecture will be held March 19, 2018, 11:00 a.m. – noon in the Doll & Hill Teaching Room (2nd floor) at the Taylor Avenue Building on the Washington University School of Medicine’s Campus; 600 S Taylor Avenue, St Louis MO, 63110.

The lecture is open to all; please RSVP to Dr. Politi at mpoliti@wustl.edu.
