Going the Extra Mile

WashU wanted us to get moving … and we did! The Spring 2016 WashU Moves Challenge was a 100-day contest that challenged employees to join together, track their daily activities and compete for prizes and recognition.

The Division of Nephrology fielded its own team, “Limp of Henle,” with team members Steven Cheng, MD, George Jarad, MD, Hary Hoffman, RN, Ben Humphreys MD, PhD and Anitha Vijayan, MD. Collectively the team limped through over 8,712,347 steps during the 100 day challenge! That is more than 3,800 miles – enough to walk from Anchorage, Alaska, to Dallas, Texas. Limp of Henle came in 7th overall out of 256 teams.

An individual award went to our own Dr. George Jarad, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Nephrology, who ranked 8th out of the top 10 individuals. Congratulations Dr. Jarad for stepping up the the challenge!

The Wellness Connection, an initiative of Washington University Human Resources, put out an activity challenge for all benefits-eligible WashU faculty, staff, clinical fellows and postdoc appointees to incorporate more movement into their daily life.

The challenge was to log 10,000 steps per day (~5 miles) for 100 days. Participants could also engage in a number of different activities and convert that movement into “steps” using a conversion guide. Research has shown that this increased activity can improve a person’s overall fitness and reduce the risk for a variety of diseases.

Congratulations to the top individuals:

  1. Linda Fleshman – The RegiSTARs
  2. Ellis Cox – Olin Means Bizznezz
  3. Ricky Durkovic – Out of Shape
