KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION AND TRANSPLANT NEPHROLOGY AT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

Washington University - Barnes-Jewish Hospital has one of the largest and most experienced kidney transplant teams in the USA. More than one-half of all kidney transplants performed in the State of Missouri are done here. The first procedure was performed in 1963 and since that time there have been more than 2,700 transplants. Approximately 170 were performed in 2008. Washington University Barnes-Jewish Hospital has one of lowest rejection rates in the world. Washington University was a pioneer in living-donor kidney transplants and is a pioneer in mini-nephrectomy (minimally invasive donor nephrectomy). About 40 percent of all kidney transplants performed by the Washington University physicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital use living donors. Nearly 760 people – among the highest volume in the USA – have received the gift of life from a living donor - a traditional or extended family member or an individual related by marriage or adoption.
